Avett Brothers
Laundry Room

Last night I dreamt the whole night long
I woke with a head full of songs
I spent the whole day
I wrote ’em down, but it’s a shame
(Teach me how to use, teach me how to use)
Tonight I’ll burn the lyrics
‘Cause every chorus was your name
(Teach me how to use, teach me how to use)

I am a breathing time machine

One

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much? More than a lot
You gave me nothin’ now it’s all I got
We’re one but we’re not the same
Well we hurt each other then we do it again
You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holdin’ on to what you got
When all you got is hurt

My Father’s House

Last night I dreamed that I was a child
Out where the pines grow wild and tall
I was trying to make it home through the forest
Before the darkness falls
I heard the wind rustling through the trees
And ghostly voices rose from the fields
I ran with my heart pounding down that broken path
With the devil snapping at my heels
I broke through the trees and there in the night
My father’s house stood shining hard and bright
The branches and brambles tore my clothes and scratched my arms
But I ran ’til I fell shaking in his arms
I awoke and I imagined, the hard things that pulled us apart
Will never again, sir, tear us from each other’s hearts
I got dressed and to that house, I did ride
From out on the road I could see its windows shining in light
I walked up the steps and stood on the porch
A woman I didn’t recognize came and spoke to me through a chained door
I told her my story and who I’d come for
She said “”I’m sorry son but no one by that name lives here anymore””
My father’s house shines hard and bright
It stands like a beacon calling me in the night
Calling and calling, so cold and alone
Shining ‘cross this dark highway where our sins lie unatoned”

Out To Get You

I’m so alone tonight
My bed feels larger than when I was small
Lost in memories, lost in all the sheets and all old pillows
So alone tonight, miss you more than I will let you know
Miss the outline of your back, miss you breathing down my neck
All out to get you, once again, they’re all out to get you, once again
Insecure, what ya gonna do
Feel so small, they could step on you
Called you up, answer machine, when the human touch
Is what I need, what I need is you, I need you
Looked in the mirror, I don’t know who I am any more
The face is familiar, but the eyes, the eyes give it all away
They’re all out to get you, once again, they’re all out to get you
Here they come again
Insecure, what ya gonna do
Feel so small, they could step on you
Called you up, answer machine, when the human touch
Is what I need, what I need is you
Let me breathe, if you’d let me breathe
They’re all out to get you, once again, they’re all out to get you

September Baby

You can feel the falling leaves
Filling up our vacant lives
When I fall onto my knees
I pray you don’t leave me behind

“You see September’s sun
Sinking in the autumn sky
If you want me to be gone
I’ve left already in my mind”

Ghosts that We Knew

You saw my pain, washed out in the rain
Broken glass, saw the blood run from my veins
But you saw no fault no cracks in my heart
And you knelt beside my hope torn apart
But the ghosts that we knew will flicker from you
And we’ll live a long life
So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light
‘Cause oh that gave me such a fright
But I will hold as long as you like
Just promise me we’ll be alright
So lead me back
Turn south from that place
And close my eyes from my recent disgrace
‘Cause you know my call
We’ll share my all
Now children come and they will hear me roar
So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light
‘Cause oh that gave me such a fright
But I will hold as long as you like
Just promise me we’ll be alright
But hold me still bury my heart on the cold
And hold me still bury my heart on the cold
So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light
‘Cause oh that gave me such a fright
But I will hold on as long as you like
Just promise me that we’ll be alright
But the ghosts that we knew made us blackened or blue
But we’ll live a long life
And the ghosts that we knew will flicker from view
And we’ll live a long life
